Additional Upgrades for Delta at JFK Terminal 4

February 12, 2013 – (Louisville, KY): Just as the new $1.2 billion Terminal 4 expansion prepares to open for Delta Air Lines in May, brand-new plans for an additional expansion have been announced.

The expansion project announced yesterday will add 11 new gates and 75,000 square feet to Terminal 4’s Concourse B. The project comes with a price-tag of $175 million and Delta has committed an additional $5 million for information technology improvements.

Delta’s new Terminal 4, Concourse B facility will feature a total of 27 Delta gates when complete. The 11 gate add-on will completely replace the chaotic regional jet operation in Terminal 2. Each gate will feature a dedicated counter, seating area, and jet bridge – no more boarding from ground level or out on the tarmac.

The initial $1.2 billion expansion project is 90% complete and is on schedule for a May opening with nine new and seven renovated international gates.

Richard Anderson, Delta’s chief executive officer, said, “This additional expansion project at Terminal 4 is another in a long line of substantial investments we are making in New York.”

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg commented, “Delta’s numerous investments in New York, including the expansion of Terminal 4, are key to strengthening our economy and maintaining New York City’s position as a top tourist destination.”

Delta’s JFK Facilities: Worst to First

International travelers arriving at Delta’s Terminal 3 complex at JFK International Airport are funneled into an outdated facility which dates back to the 1960’s. Space is at a premium as travelers traverse the bowels of Terminal 3 to clear US Customs and Immigrations.

Starting in May, planes destined for Terminal 3 will arrive into the new Terminal 4 expansion.

The $1.2 billion expansion project in Terminal 4 is set to open this May, delivering a state-of-the-art, showcase terminal facility to Delta Air Lines at New York’s JFK Airport. International travelers arriving into the United States will no longer be forced into the outdated bowels of Terminal 3 to clear US Immigrations and Customs at a facility built in the 1960s.

In fact, the original Terminal 3 at JFK served as Pan Am’s iconic Worldport in the golden era of aviation.

The new arrivals area will include improved improved Customs and Border Protection facilities while a central security checkpoint will be built for departing passengers inside Terminal 4.

A new 24,000 square-foot Delta Sky Club will open featuring an outdoor “Sky Deck” terrace.

Once open, the new facility will welcome passengers flying on New York’s fastest growing global airline. The new facilities will meet the needs of the world’s most competitive and largest aviation market.

The planning of this project dates back to August of 2010 with an agreement between Delta, The Port Authority of New York-New Jersey, and JFKIAT LLC. JFKIAT is the operator of Terminal 4.

Once the new Terminal 4 facility opens in May, Delta will operate a fleet of 10 buses to carry connecting passengers between Terminals 2 and 4.

The once iconic Terminal 3 will be razed.
