Winter Storm Luna Delays and Cancels Flights

January 28, 2013 – (Louisville, KY): As Winter Storm Luna hits the east coast, airports from Philadelphia to Toronto are facing adverse weather conditions. At the moment, the FAA has ground delay programs in effect for New York City area airports.

To avoid delays and the possibility of an aircraft being stranded on the tarmac, which is now governed by strict DOT rules, airlines are cancelling flights. The flights most likely to operate are long-haul international flights followed by trans-continental flights to key west coast markets. Regional and short haul flights are more likely to be impacted by delays and cancellations with the winter storm.

The good news is airlines are issuing winter weather waivers allowing consumers to re-book their tickets, even if their flight is not cancelled.

American Airlines Winter Weather

American Airlines has issued a winter weather waiver for customers booked on American Airlines, American Eagle, and AmericanConnection flights today, January 28.

If you’re scheduled to fly to or through New York Kennedy (JFK), New York LaGuardia (LGA), Newark Liberty International (EWR), or White Plains (HPN), American will allow you to have a re-issue fee waived for one ticket change and allow you to travel as late as January 30th.

Delta Air Lines Weather Waiver

If you’re traveling today, January 28, on Delta to, from, or through New York-Kennedy (JFK), New York-LaGuardia (LGA), Newark Liberty (EWR), Newburgh-Stewart, New York (SWF), or White Plains, New York (HPN), Delta Air Lines will waive your change fee and allow you to reschedule travel on or before January 30, 2013.

As of this writing at 12:19pm EST, JetBlue has not issued a winter weather waiver. The airline has issued an alert advising the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic may experience delays and suggests you check the current status of your flight.

US Airways

As of this writing at 12:19pm EST, we are not aware of any weather waiver for US Airways.

United Airlines

United Airlines does have a waiver in place for the New York City area including their hub at Newark Liberty International (EWR).

If you are scheduled to fly United Airlines to, from, or through Newark Liberty (EWR), New York-Kennedy (JFK), New York-LaGuardia (LGA), or White Plains, New York (HPN), United has a waiver program in effect for today, January 28th.

Fees for same-day flight changes are waived within 24 hours of original departure. Other changes are allowed and the change fee will be waived, but a difference in fare may apply.

What to do if My Flight is Cancelled?

If your flight is cancelled, your airline has an obligation to re-book you on the next flight with seats available to your destination. It may be non-stop or it may be via a hub, including a different hub than you were originally scheduled to fly through.

If you wish to cancel your trip, you are entitled to a refund for flights not flown. If you haven’t started your trip, this means you’re entitled to a full refund.

When being re-booked onto the next available flight, keep in mind airlines are operating with high loads and it may take a day or two to get you to your destination if loads are high on the route you are flying. If a nearby alternative airport is acceptable, let the agent know, as there may be seats into an airport like Oakland when flights to San Francisco are full.

If your flight is cancelled because of mechanical reasons, you should be entitled to meal vouchers as well as lodging if an overnight delay is involved. If the delay is weather in nature, you’re typically on your own, but airlines may provide you a discounted rate at an airport hotel.
