New York LaGuardia to Re-Open Today

Welcome to New York at LaGuardia

Welcome to New York at LaGuardia (LGA) Airport

LaGuardia Airport Re-Opened 7:00am EDT – November 1, 2012

New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA) is now open for limited air traffic as the flood water which had covered the runways, runway lighting, and navigational equipment recedes. It is being reported only one runway is open under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) and will only operate during daylight hours.

Precision instrument landing equipment which was exposed to corrosive saltwater must be inspected and repaired.

Currently, 7:00am EDT, November 1, 2012, there are a number of re-positioning flights en-route to LaGuardia Airport.

UPDATE: 11:30am, November 1, 2012: There are many flights arriving and departing at LaGuardia Airport. While a limited schedule, most major airlines are operating.

If you have plans to fly to or from New York LaGuardia, please check with your airline before arriving at the airport. Flight operations will be limited over the next couple of days and it will take time for the airport to fully re-open.

If you can’t get in or out of LaGuardia and your air carrier operates from Newark (EWR) or Kennedy (JFK) Airport, you might be allowed to change airports. The three New York City airports are generally designated as co-terminals by the legacy carriers.

As you are likely aware, there is a shortage of ground transportation in New York City with the subway closed from flooding. New York City Taxi’s are temporarily allowed to pick-up multiple fares as a result of Hurricane Sandy and there have been reports of price-gouging by some New York City taxi drivers. When picking up a taxi in New York City, it is always a good idea to make a note of the taxi license ID number or to take a picture of the license with a smartphone device. The TLC number is required to be in a visible space and is issued by the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC).

MTA buses are operating on limited schedules and bus fares are temporarily free.

Automobile rentals may provide you with better ground transportation options, but be aware that travel in some areas, including some bridges, requires multiple passengers in a vehicle.

Newark Liberty Airport and New York JFK Status

Both Newark Liberty International (EWR) and New York Kennedy (JFK) are open. Some air carriers are operating reduced flight schedule as a result of the conditions in New York City, including transportation challenges.

Flight schedules are expected to return to normal within the next week as conditions improve across the bi-state metropolitan area.

Please keep in mind individuals who work at the airport, including airline employees, airport vendors, TSA screeners, and US Customs and Border Protection agents, also face challenges with ground transportation between their homes and the airport.

Most air carriers are still providing weather waivers which allow for ticket changes free of charge. Check with your airline for specific details.

The airlines the hardest hit are the ones with hubs in the NYC area. Delta Air Lines operates hubs at both New York LaGuardia (LGA) and New York Kennedy (JFK) Airport, JetBlue’s primary hub is at JFK airport, and United Airlines operates a hub at Newark Liberty International (EWR).

New York Ground Transportation Update

UPDATE: 11:00am

Fourteen (14) of New York’s Twenty-Three (23) Subway lines are now operating in some capacity.

No Subway Services South of 32nd Street in Manhattan. Power remains out in much of lower Manhattan.

Travel around New York City is getting easier, but is still a challenge.
