Salt Lake City Ski Areas

Despite our location in the Ohio Valley, we find the Salt Lake City Ski Resorts to be among the best, primarily because you can fly in and be skiing in under a couple of hours, be it Snowbird, Alta, or Park City.

Park City Mountain Resort

Park City Mountain Resort is located in the heart of Park City, Utah, and is an easy 40-minute interstate drive from the Salt Lake International Airport (SLC). There’s more than 900 daily flights arriving into the Salt Lake City Airport. In fact, there are so many direct flights, you can leave home in the morning and be on the mountain by noon — or ski the entire day and be on the plane home at night.

Ironically, I have done just that – I’ve flown into Salt Lake City Intl (SLC) in the AM, went skiing in Park City, and then took a shuttle back to Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) at the end of the day for a red-eye flight home.

Much of this is possible because Delta Air Lines operates a hub at Salt Lake and it’s also a Focus City for Southwest.

The base elevation at Park City is 6,900 feet above sea level and the summit is at 10,000 feet above sea level. The snowfall is splendid – Utah’s famous dry powder – 360 inches of it annually.

We address altitude sickness later, but the base at Breckenridge in Colorado is at 9,600 feet above sea level to put the two areas in comparison.

Those lodging in the Park City area are also near Deer Park and The Canyons Ski Resorts.

If you’re looking for Park City lodging, we suggest you look at:

Denver, Colorado Area Ski Resorts

Keystone and Breckenridge are among our two favorites here, but you can spend a good several hours getting here from Denver International Airport (DEN).

Once out of the airport and onto I-70, you’ll climb to an altitude over 11,000 feet – on the road – 50 miles west of Denver. Here, you’ll go through The Eisenhower Tunnel which takes Interstate 70 traffic under the Continental Divide at an altitude in excess of 11,000 feet above sea level.

The Eisenhower Tunnel is also a record breaker – its maximum elevation is 11,158 feet above sea level, the highest point in the United States Interstate System. It’s also the longest tunnel associated with the interstate system at nearly 1.7 miles.

If you have a fear of tunnels, just think you could be going through the Tunnel Mount Blanc at 7.2 miles. The tunnel connects Chamonix, France, with Courmayeur, Aosta Valley, Italy. If love to ski, there’s some great slopes in Chamonix, located in the French Alps. The quickest way to Chamonix is by commercial flight into Geneva, Switzerland (GVA) followed by ground transportation.

Nearby is Loveland Ski Resort and Loveland Pass, which crosses the continental divide at nearly 12,000 feet above sea level – 11,992 feet to be precise.

As Vail owns Beaver Creek, Keystone, and Breckenridge, some lift tickets are interchangeable and allow you to ski multiple mountains.

It’s also possible to fly into Eagle County Airport (EGE) if going to Vail – however, the Vail and Beaver Creek Ski areas are separated from Keystone and Breckenridge by Vail Pass. Eagle County gets busy during the ski season with Boeing 737, Boeing 757, and Airbus A320 jets.

Book a flight + hotel ski vacation package for two nights or more at select hotels in Keystone, Colorado and kids ski FREE. Book: 10/12 – 2/28.

As the peaks are higher in this area, we suggest you take high altitude precautions. The elevation affects people in different ways and will be more noticeable at first if sleeping at a high altitude. It’s of utmost importance to stay hydrated — wear sunscreen, drink plenty of water and limit the consumption of alcohol and caffeine. If symptoms such as headache, nausea, lethargy or shortness of breath persist, visitors should seek immediate medical attention. Altitude sickness isn’t something to joke around with.

Denver’s International Airport (DEN) is a hub for United Airlines and Frontier Airlines, plus it serves as a focus city for Southwest Airlines.  With the competition, fares are typically reasonable into the mile high city.

Keystone & Breckenridge Ski Resorts

Keystone will open November, 2, 2012, for the 2012-2013 ski season. Keystone has 3,148 acres of skiiable terrain and its highest point is 12,408 feet above sea level at the summit. The resort also features night skiing on the lower portion of the mountain.

As previously mentioned, Keystone is owned by Vail and your lift ticket may also be good at Breckenridge.

Over at Breckenridge, they will be opening November 9th for the 2012-2013 ski season.

The base elevation is 9,600 feet above sea level while the summit is at 12,998 feet above sea level. The resort has over 2,358 acres of skiiable terrain with something from everyone including a beginners area and the double-black diamond for the expert dare-devil.

The town of Breckenridge is full of restaurants, brewpubs/bars, as well as shopping.

For those who do go on a skiing trip, if there’s unanswered questions about your medical coverage (or no coverage), we always suggest travel insurance. If you receive a bad injury or get extremely sick, it’s possible you may have to be taken down to Denver.

We highly suggest travel insurance provided through Travel Guard, which we personally use. Travel insurance starting at $30
