United Airlines’ first Boeing 787 took-off on its initial production flight on August 20, 2012, as Boeing finishes the final touches to deliver the new airplane to the Chicago based airline. After departure from Boeing’s Paine Field in Washington State, the aircraft flew around the Seattle area in excess of three hours while conducting tests at both high and medium flight levels. System backups, safety devices, as well as pressurization, avionics, navigation computers, and communication systems were given the once over.

Official delivery to United Airlines is near and the carrier is now finalizing schedules for flights that’ll be assigned Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner equipment.

Aside from the official announcement that United will operate the Boeing 787 Dreamliner between their Denver Hub (DEN) and Tokyo-Narita (NRT) starting March 31, 2013, the new aircraft will also operate between United’s hub at Houston Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and Lagos Murtala Mohammed Intl Airport (LOS) in Nigeria beginning on January 7th, 2013.

To ring in the new years, United will operate the 787 Dreamliner starting January 3, 2013, between Los Angeles International (LAX) and Tokyo-Narita (NRT). The Los Angeles (LAX) to Shanghai International (PVG) route will be flying the all-new aircraft as of March 30, 2013.

If you can’t wait until 2013 and must really snag a ride on this bird, United will temporarily fly the 787 Dreamliner from its Houston Intercontinental Hub (IAH) to Amsterdam Schiphol International (AMS) beginning December 4, 2012. A second temporary route will start on February 4, 2013, between Houston (IAH) and London Heathrow (LHR).

United’s Senior Vice President of Network, Greg Hart, said, “The 787 is the right aircraft for these routes because of its many passenger-friendly amenities and superior operating economics.” Hart continues, “With 50 787s on order, we look forward to the many new route opportunities that will become available to United and our customers in the future.”
