Southwest Lands at Akron-Canton and Dayton

Southwest Airlines at BWI on take-off

Is Akron-Canton and Dayton ready for the Southwest Affect?

The impact of Southwest Airlines at altering prices after it enters a new market is so great that it has a name – the Southwest Affect.

With the on-going Southwest and Airtran Merger, Southwest has officially brought Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) and Dayton International Airport (DAY) to the growing route network on Sunday, August 12.

Over at Akron-Canton, Southwest kicked things off with with two daily roundtrip flights to their focus city at Chicago Midway (MDW), plus a daily nonstop, roundtrip flight to Denver (DEN).

Further south in Dayton (DAY), Southwest will start off a bit slower with one daily flight to Denver International Airport (DEN).

Southwest flights will compliment AirTran in these two Ohio destinations until the two air carriers determine the best time to convert all AirTran flying to Southwest. Mergers aren’t always easy, plus industry analysts have commented on the additional ancillary revenue AirTran is able to pull in with checked baggage fees.

Southwest Airlines Executive Vice President & Chief Commercial Officer and AirTran Airways President Bob Jordan, said, “Our arrival in Akron-Canton and Dayton represents one of the true benefits to our integration with AirTran Airways, and it cements low fares and legendary Customer Service in these markets for decades to come.” Jordan added, “Southwest is committed to serving these new markets with exceptional Customer Service at a great value, with access to the broad Southwest network of destinations.”

“We are thrilled to welcome Southwest Airlines to Akron-Canton Airport,” said Rick McQueen, President and CEO. “We’ve been courting the LUV airline for 25 years now, so this inaugural is particularly sweet. As AirTran and Southwest become one airline, our Customers benefit from more access, destinations, and value. Nothing beats that.”

“Southwest’s arrival at Dayton International Airport is a very positive announcement for our community with clear benefits,” said Terrence Slaybaugh, Director of Aviation at Dayton International Airport. “Expanding our destination offerings with Southwest Airlines – known for its customer-focused service – is an ideal partnership to provide our passengers with the ‘Where Flying is Fun Again’ experience every time they fly DAY.”

Today, AirTran still operates 11 daily flights at Akron-Canton (CAK) in addition to another eight daily flights from Dayton (DAY).

Other power-house routes launched this day include Norfolk (ORF) to Atlanta (ATL), Nashville (BNA) to Boston (BOS), St. Louis (STL) to New York LaGuardia (LGA) and St. Louis (STL) to San Antonio (SAT) on August 12, 2012.
