Spirit to Begin BWI Flights to Fort Lauderdale and Dallas/Fort Worth

Spirit Airlines will launch flights from Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) with twice daily nonstop flights to Fort Lauderdale (FLL) and one daily flight to Dallas/Fort Worth International (DFW).

Paul J. Wiedefeld, Executive Director of BWI Marshall Airport, said, “We are pleased to welcome Spirit Airlines, which will offer additional flight options and low fares for our customers.” Wiedefeld added, “BWI Marshall has the longstanding reputation as the convenient, ‘easy come, easy go’ airport for the Washington-Baltimore region. The addition of Spirit bolsters that value for travelers in this market.”

Mark Kopczak, a Maryland native and Spirit’s Senior Director of Network Planning, said, “Spirit has been providing low fares to Fort Lauderdale with connections to the Caribbean and Latin America from the Washington, DC/Baltimore area for nine years, and we look forward to better serving our customers from throughout the region at its premier low-cost airport – the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.” Kopczak continued, “Our new location at BWI provides Spirit with better scheduling flexibility and the ability to add flights to more cities nonstop, which ultimately translates to better service and more low fare options for our customers. Spirit’s new nonstop service to Dallas/Fort Worth is a perfect example of the flexibility that BWI provides us.”

Could Spirit be the First Airline to Relocate from DCA to BWI

Spirit Airlines is relocating its operations from Washington, DC’s Reagan National Airport (DCA) to BWI. If you currently hold a Spirit Airlines Ticket between National Airport (DCA) and Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Spirit will be contacting you for re-accommodation on a BWI flight.

Spirit will discontinue its operations at DCA on September 5, 2012.

Typically Airlines are wanting to enter slot restricted airports such as Washington National (DCA) because of its near downtown DC location and the premium they can obtain because of the airports convenience.

In the case of Spirit, it appears Washington National was too expensive for operations and the perimeter rule could hurt Spirit’s expansion plans from the Greater Washington DC area.
