American Resumes JFK to Tokyo Haneda
American Airlines is set to resume flights from New York’s Kennedy Airport (JFK) to Tokyo-Haneda Airport (HND) on June 1, 2012. The route was once operated non-stop by American, but the airline temporarily ceased service as a result of low demand after the devastating earthquake and tsunami.
During the slowdown, American Airlines continued service to Tokyo’s Narita Airport (NRT) via other hub cities. Narita is Japan’s largest international airport, as well as the primary port of entry for travelers entering the country. Travel time from Narita Airport to downtown Tokyo takes approximately one hour by train.
Unlike Narita, Haneda is Tokyo’s close-in downtown airport and is used primarily for domestic flights and offers connecting flights through-out the nation. As Tokyo’s downtown airport, nearly 70 million passengers pass through annually making it Asia’s second busiest airport and the fifth busiest airport in the world.
American, along with it’s Pacific oneworld business partner, Japan Airlines (JAL), will now provide consumers with the choice of two daily flights from New York’s JFK Airport and Tokyo — one JAL flight to Tokyo Narita (NRT) and the resumed American Airlines flight to Haneda (HND).
The American Airlines flight will be operated by a Boeing 777-200ER with 247 seats, including 16 in First, 37 in Business, and 194 in the Economy Cabin.
Tim Ahern, American’s Vice President – New York/International, said, “We are delighted to again offer our customers these extremely convenient flights.” Ahern continued, “Travel between these two great cities is a key ingredient in commerce and cultural exchange between the United States and Japan, and we are pleased to team up with our excellent partner JAL in providing customers two travel choices every day.”
Yuki Tanaka, Executive Director, New York Office of the Japan National Tourism Organization, said, “Tourism from the United States to Japan is on the upswing, and American visitors will be delighted by the many new hotels and attractions Tokyo offers today. The resumption of American’s nonstop flight to Haneda from JFK should accelerate this positive trend, since the proximity of Haneda to downtown Tokyo will make it all the more inviting for Americans to visit this fascinating city and experience its many attractions, including the finest in culture, food, sports and entertainment.”
