US Launch Carrier for Innovative – Award Winning Seat

Alaska Airlines and Recaro Aircraft Seating have just announced Alaska Airlines as the launch customer for a new, innovative main cabin seat which provides passengers with more legroom.

You may not see the seats immediately, but when combined with the Boeing Sky Interior with LED lighting, it’s said to be a slick setup.  The new, award-winning seats will first be installed on twenty-two (22) new Boeing 737-900ER’s scheduled for delivery between fall 2012 and 2014.

The airline isn’t eliminating seats in its main cabin – instead, they’ve gotten smarter when it comes to seats with a slim seatback and bottom, along with the literature pocket being moved above the tray table.

Joe Sprague, Alaska Airlines’ Vice President of Marketing, said, “That means our main cabin customers will enjoy more than an inch of extra legroom with our existing spacing between each row of seats.”  Sprague continues, “The new seats add to a very special onboard experience that all of our customers flying Alaska’s new 737-900ERs will enjoy, including Boeing’s Sky Interior—with its improved lighting and sculpted overhead bins that create a more spacious cabin—onboard Wi-Fi, Starbucks coffee, premium Washington wines and delicious meals for purchase, as well as our renowned personal service.”

The type of Recaro seats Alaska Airlines will use includes customized, enhanced-comfort cushions, a six-way adjustable headrest and the standard three inches of recline.  The new seat is lighter and will save approximately 8,000 gallons of jet fuel annual – per aircraft.

Up front in Alaska Airlines’ First Class Cabin, the 737-900ER’s will be outfit with a different premium Recaro seat with five inches of recline, an articulating seat bottom and a six-way adjustable headrest.

The German based seat manufacturer, Recaro, won Europe’s 2011 Crystal Cabin Award and the 2012 red dot design award with the BL3520 model.
