No Survivors | Bhoja Air Flight 213 Crash

Inaugural Flight Crashes

Bhoja Air flight 213 was making its inaugural flight from Karachi to Islambad, Pakistan, when it crashed on final approach to the airport at approximately 6:50pm (local time) on Friday, April 20th.

Hospitals were put on standby as emergency rescue teams were dispatched to the crash site; however, there were no survivors.

The flight, operated by a Boeing 737-200, was reported by the airline to have 121 passengers and a crew of six on-board.

While on final approach to Islambad’s runway 30, the aircraft went through an area of thunderstorm activity and impacted the ground 3 miles short of the airport.   Witnesses reports indicate the aircraft was struck by lightning prior to going down near Jinnah Gardens.

Pakistani authorities said nearly a dozen homes were destroyed near Jinnah Gardens when the aircraft broke up and burned upon impact.

Conflicting reports exist concerning the exact number of passengers on-board.  Authorities have reported 126 passengers on-board while Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has put the figure at 121 passengers and 9 crew, while the airline manifest indicates 121 people and a crew of six.

Both black boxes, the voice and data recorder, were recovered.

The cause of the crash is not known at this time, but Islambad was reporting thunderstorms, winds between 20 and 30 knots, with a build-up of cumulonimbus clouds in the area.

The Boeing 737-200 is an older model of the popular single-aisle aircraft.  The plane involved in the accident was nearly 28 years old, but it’s important to note with proper maintenance age of the aircraft should not be an issue.  It’s possible the aircraft may have encountered a microburst / windshear based on weather reports at the time of the crash, while there is also speculation of controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) as a result of the poor weather conditions.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
