Shine A Light for Philadelphia Freedom

Virgin Brings Freedom For Philadelphia

Shine the Runway Lights, Philadelphia, as Virgin America “redwood” touches down.  Virgin America is the first airline to launch new service in Philadelphia in eight years.

Philadelphia is not only Virgin America’s 17th destination, but a hub for US Airways which drives up prices in markets lacking competition.  Today not only brings freedom with the first new competition in eight years, but competition with style and flair.  Not only do the new flights create jobs, but they provide freedom with a fresh choice in air carriers to the west coast.

When Virgin America’s first flight from Los Angeles (LAX) to Philadelphia (PHL) arrived today, the red carpet was rolled out and the flight greeted by Philadelphia Mayor Nutter and Virgin Group Founder Sir Richard Branson for a “tailgate on the tarmac” celebration.

Virgin America has become the airline of choice for entertainment and sports fans – and the carrier teamed up with FX’s hit show “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” to announce the Philadelphia route in January to offer fans the chance to join the show’s sports-crazed Greenman for the ultimate tailgate party upon touch-down of the first Virgin ‘tail’ at Philadelphia (PHL).

Today marks the start of new, non-stop flghts between Los Angeles and Philadelphia three time daily.  San Francisco (SFO) to Philadelphia (PHL) flights, twice daily, will begin a few days later on April 10.  The good news is there’s also connecting flights across the west coast once the full schedule starts on April 10, 2012, to San Diego, Seattle, Las Vegas, and Portland, Oregon (PDX), as it becomes the next destination on June 5th.

Virgin America President and Chief Executive Officer David Cush, said, “Philadelphia is a vibrant, world class city that deserves more airline competition.”  Cush continued, “In addition to bringing low fare competition to routes previously only served nonstop by legacy carriers, we believe our unique service will be a welcome change for Philadelphians tired of the typical domestic airline cattle car.”

“This is a great day for Philadelphia and our Airport,”said Mayor Michael A. Nutter.  “We are thrilled that travelers in our region now have convenient access to Virgin America’s award-winning service.  This new service to the West Coast will stimulate our regional economy and give travelers more choices.  It’s a pleasure to welcome Virgin America to our Airport family, and I congratulate this fine airline for recognizing the value of doing business with our great city.”

Virgin America has launched a “Liberating” network-wide fare sale in light of the new service.

With one of the youngest fleets in the U.S., Virgin America offers unique, tech-forward aircraft cabins with a list of amenities from custom designed seats, in-flight WiFi, ‘moodlighting’ which transitions between 12 shades depending on outside light, power outlets at every seat, and RED – one of the most advanced entertainment systems with on-demand movies to live satellite television.

In addition to the main cabin, Virgin America offers Main Cabin Select with 38-inches of pitch, free food and cocktails, an all-access pass to media, dedicated overhead bins and priority check–in/boarding, but it gets better with First Class with plush white leather seating with 55 inches of pitch, 165 degrees of recline and lumbar massagers.
