JAL Announces Delivery of 1st 787

JAL First Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner

Japan Airlines (JAL) announced today, March 21, 2012, it will take delivery of its first Boeing 787-8 on March 25, 2012, and the aircraft – JA822J – will be flown from Seattle’s Paine Field (PAE) to Tokyo-Narita (NRT), the following day.

The first Boeing 787 received by JAL will be used for the much publicized Boston-Logan Intl (BOS) to Tokyo-Narita (NRT) route on April 22, 2012.  Later in the year, JAL will use the fuel-efficient 787-8 Dreamliner to launch non-stop service between Tokyo-Narita (NRT) and San Diego (SAN) per an announcement by JAL.

The 787 will eventually be deployed on routes between Tokyo and Beijing, Moscow, New Delhi and Singapore as soon as subsequent aircraft are delivered and all necessary preparations are completed.

Seating Configurations – JAL 787-8

JAL’s 787 Dreamliner is configured in two classes with 42 seats in business and 144 seats in economy.  The airline will fit its newest Executive Class with JAL “SHELL FLAT NEO” seats.  The seats are 2 inches wider than the seats now fitted on JAL’s Boeing 777s.

The lavatories in Executive (Business) class also feature a special warm-water Toto Washlet jointly developed by companies Toto, JAMCO and Boeing.

The 144 Economy Class seats are just under 1 inch wider than current seats and arranged in a 2-4-2 configuration.

In the design process of the 787 Dreamliner, JAL actively participated with Boeing in a “Working Together” team program which involved input from airline customers. In a statement, JAL has said, “JAL aimed to demonstrate hospitality from the heart in all customer-contact points in the cabin as well as the work space for cabin attendants such as the kitchen equipment in the galley.”

787-8 Highlights

Hightlights include larger windows – 30% larger than other Boeing widebodies.  The large windows allow more light to enter the cabin and provide a great view of the outside.  As you’ve likely heard, the windows will not have window shades, but instead will be electronically dimmable.

The LED lighting allows a variety of colors to be used to create mood lighting; JAL’s initial onboard lighting creates a calm in-flight atmosphere which evokes a sense of the four seasons in Japan, such as pink hues of cherry blossoms in the Spring.   The lighting will also be used to help reduce jetlag.

Higher Ceilings and a Lower Cabin Pressure make long flights more comfortable and the lower pressure is said to be noticeable to customers after a long-haul flight flight as a result of increased humidity.  Finally, JAL will install a new type of in-flight entertainment known as SKY MANGA.
