Virgin America to land at PDX

Los Angeles and San Francisco to Portland

Virgin America will bring RED to the Rose City as an Airbus known as Redwood is cleared to land at Portland International Airport (PDX) starting June 5th with flights from San Francisco (SFO) and Los Angeles (LAX).  These new routes bring some much need nonstop competition from California’s largest airports to PDX.

Portland, Oregon, will be the airline’s 18th destination and will not only bring lower fares, but they also bring service with decked out-custom designed planes, lighting, and their in-flight entertainment system known as RED.  At a time when other airlines are shrinking or consolidating, Virgin America is growing.  When entering some markets the carrier has frequently seen fares drop by up to 30 percent.

Virgin America President and CEO David Cush said, “Our airline launched in 2007 because we believed travelers deserved better choices in air travel.  We are excited to start new service to PDX and we hope our unique blend of low fares and inventive service will be a fresh alternative for Portland travelers.”  Cush Continued, “Although there are strong business and leisure travel ties between California and Portland, the West Coast to PDX market generally has higher fares than similar flights to Seattle and the reason is competition.  We are thrilled to offer Portland travelers a different choice – in an industry often characterized by monotony.”

Bill Wyatt, Port of Portland executive director, said, “We’re pleased to welcome Virgin America to Portland International Airport.” Wyatt continued, “Virgin America is known for its award-winning service and for doing things differently, and will bring PDX travelers new options for two of our most popular routes—Los Angeles and San Francisco.”

Those seats and the cabin look sick (as in good!)

Now only if they can add more cities.
