Barcelona Based Volotea Initial Routes

Volotea Airlines Starts Venice Base | Air Travel News

New European Low Cost Carrier – Boeing 717 Fleet

Volotea is a new, Barcelona based, low cost carrier founded by former Vueling founders. The airline is operated by Alaeo S.L., with Carlos Muñoz and Lázaro Ros at the helm.  Despite the demise of Barcelona based Spanair, it appears Volotea will initially start operating from Venice, Italy, with an initial base at Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE).

As we covered in Barcelona Based Volotea 717′s to Take-Off, the start-up has taken delivery of their first Boeing 717-200 aircraft from Boeing Capital Corporation.  The airline will receive an undisclosed number of Boeing 717’s through a long term lease deal with Boeing.  Volotea has the backing of three private-equity funds and sufficient cash on-hand.

The airline will use the Boeing 717-200 to kick off their point to point services.  The 717 was chosen because of its size and its proven ability to make fast turns.  US based Hawaiian Airlines, the primary Hawaiian ‘island jumping’ carrier can attest to its efficiency and the ability to turn around quickly.

First Volotea Airlines Routes

Since the demise of Spanair, there is unmet demand in several markets the defunct carrier once served.  When Volotea was originally announced, many thought the start-up would jump into these markets.  However, this is not the case as Volotea will use Venice as their initial base.

Should Volotea not dive into these Barcelona markets with unmet demand, other carriers will pick the routes up.

Aside from Volotea’s Italian base at Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE), the airline announced it will fly to the following cities:

  • Bordeaux, France – Bordeaux–Mérignac Airport (BOD)
  • Thessaloniki, Greece – Thessaloniki International Airport (SKG)
  • Budapest, Hungary – Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD)
  • Brindisi, Italy – Papola Casale Airport (BDS)
  • Cagliari, Italy – Cagliari-Elmas Airport (CAG)
  • Olbia, Italy – Costa Smeralda Airport (OBL)
  • Palermo, Italy – Palermo Airport (PMO)
  • Reggio Calabria, Italy – Reggio Calabria Airport (REG)
  • Krakow, Poland – John Paul II International Airport (KRK)
  • Porto, Portugal – Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO)
  • Alicante, Spain – Alicante Airport (ALC)
  • Bilbao, Spain – Bilbao Airport (BIO)
  • Malaga, Spain – Málaga Airport (AGP)
  • Santiago de Compostela, Spain – Santiago de Compostela Airport (SCQ)

The airline will start operations on April 5th, 2012, on their Italian routes; flights to the announced cities in Greece, Poland, Portugal, and Spain will begin on April 24th.  Finally, flights to France and Hungary will launch on April 25th.

Volotea will continue evaluating routes and will grow their point to point network as additional Boeing 717 aircraft are delivered.
