American to add More Space in Coach

American to Start Main Cabin Select - More Economy Room | FlyersPulse Airline News

More Room Through-Out (some) Coach

Remember when American Airlines brought-out and marketed More Room Through-Out Coach or MRTC?  I do, but that enhancement is a thing of the past, as I squeeze into my 32 inch seat (pitch) for my flight from London Heathrow to Chicago O’Hare.

However, good news is on the horizon.  To stay competitive with United’s Economy Plus, Delta’s Economy Comfort, and Virgin America’s Main Cabin Select, American Airlines is introducing Main Cabin Extra.

American Airlines plans to outfit their entire mainline fleet with Main Cabin Extra, providing customers an extra four to six inches of legroom in addition to priority boarding.  The Main Cabin Extra installations will begin this year and over time, every aircraft will be updated.   Additionally, all new Boeing 737-800 aircraft delivered to American will be outfit with Main Cabin Extra as of this fall.  Future aircraft including the Airbus fleet, Boeing 777-300ERs, and Boeing 787s will also offer Main Cabin Extra.

While new outfits will take time, American has indicated Main Cabin Seating will be available on the majority of their within 18 months.

Virasb Vahidi, American’s Chief Commercial Officer, said, “We continue to provide our customers with choices that enable them to customize their travel on American to be the experience they desire and value.”

Select members of American’s Frequent Flyer Program AAdvantage will have access to these seats as part of the elite benefits program; this includes Executive Platinum and AAdvantage Platinum members. Customers who purchase full-fare economy class tickets will receive complimentary access to Main Cabin Extra, subject to availability.

The lowest elite tier, AAdvantage Gold, in American’s Frequent Flyer Program will also receive complementary access to the new seating through December 31, 2013.

American will continue to block seats in the front of the coach cabin, including Main Cabin Extra, for elite customers to select anytime between booking and check-in.

Other customers who are seeking extra leg-room may purchase Main Cabin Extra — when it comes to prices, expect anywhere between $8 and $108 per segment, depending on the length of the flight. Main Cabin Extra will soon be available for purchase this spring for travel on-board the new Boeing 777-300ERs, which will be deployed on flights to Brazil initially.

The Main Cabin Extra seats, which do provide more room in coach, can be reserved on aa.com, at self-service kiosk machines, through American Airlines reservations centers, and travel agencies using American’s “direct connect.”

Last, if you happen to be an active member of the US Military, the seats are on the house.

Any news on SkySteward aka David Gailen being fired by American Airlines? He made a series of YouTube videos chastising American for their massive cost cutting and employee terminations.
