All Boeing 717 European Low Cost Carrier

In the absence of Spanair, a new Barcelona based low cost carrier, Volotea, has entered into a long-term lease deal with Boeing.  The start-up has already taken delivery of their first 717-200 airplane from Boeing Capital Corporation and plans to begin a new European point-to-point service with an all Boeing 717 fleet by early April 2012.

Volotea will be operated by Alaeo S.L., a company created by Vueling founders, Carlos Muñoz and Lázaro Ros.  Under the multi-year agreement, Boeing will start additional deliveries of the 717 twin-jet aircraft in March 2012.  The number of aircraft leased under the contract was not disclosed.

The Boeing 717 twin-jet aircraft made its mark with carriers such as US based Hawaiian Airlines.  Designed for quick turns, high frequency, and short-range markets, the 717 provides passengers with large jet comforts, while being friendly to the communities it operates in with the lowest noise and emissions in its class.  The aircraft is powered by two, rear-mounted, Rolls-Royce BR715 high-bypass-ratio engines.

Carlos Munoz, Volotea’s founder and CEO, said, “Volotea’s goal is to forge new and efficient air connections between Europe’s small and mid-sized cities currently not well served by direct flights. We see the 717’s capabilities as the best solution for us in filling this need, and we see the partnership with Boeing as the right one for our success.”

Volotea’s 717s will be setup in an all-economy layout to carry 125 passengers in a 2 x 3 seating arrangement.  The first 717 was delivered in 1999 and today more than 150 are in service.  The aircraft’s technology and performance has earned the Boeing 717 the distinction of being the world’s best jet servicing the 100 passenger market.

Thomas Hansen, Boeing Capital director of asset management, said, “The 717 is ideally suited for the market where Volotea hopes to thrive. The twinjet is a good neighbor – it is fuel efficient and easier on the environment than its competitors. These are important concerns for the European market, and the 717 addresses them better than any other product in its market niche”

Volotea has yet to announce the routes they will operated, but with the demise of Barcelona based Spanair there are now markets with demand and unmet capacity.

The Boeing 717, originally dubbed the MD-95 after the larger MD-90. However, after Boeing purchased McDonnell Douglas the MD-95 launched as the Boeing 717.
