Southwest and its wholly owned subsidiary, AirTran Airways, received route authority approval from the US Department of Transportation for AirTran to operate new international flights between Denver International Airport (DEN) and Cancun International Airport (CUN). Route authority was also granted for Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) to Cancun International Airport (CUN).
Austin is new on AirTran’s route map, but is an existing Southwest station. These new flights will be operated by AirTran and the new international flights include:
Between Denver and Cancun:
Daily roundtrip service starting April 16, 2012, through July 7, 2012
Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday service starting July 8, 2012, through Aug. 12, 2012
Saturday and Sunday service starting Aug. 13, 2012, through the end of the schedule (currently Sept. 28, 2012)
Between Austin and Cancun:
Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday roundtrip flights starting May 25, 2012, through Aug. 31, 2012
Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday roundtrip flights starting Sept. 1, 2012, through the end of the schedule (currently Sept. 28, 2012)
In addition to the new international flights, AirTran will operate nonstop round-trip flights between Houston Hobby (HOU) and San Antonio (SAT) and between Houston Hobby (HOU) and Austin (AUS). The new flights start May 24, 2012, and May 25, 2012 respectively and will operate through the current flight schedule which ends on September 28, 2012.
