Spirit Airlines Orders 75 Airbus A320 including A320neo | Air Travel News

Firm Order 75 A320 Family including 45 A320neo

According to Airbus, Spirit Airlines finalized a firm order for 75 of their single isle A320 family aircraft, including 45 A320neo (New Engine Option).   The original Memorandum of Understanding for this order was announced at the 2011 Dubai air show.  In December of 2011, Spirit’s order for 45 A320neo aircraft was booked; the firm commitment of the additional 30 A320s last month brings the new order to 75.

The new aircraft will allow Spirit to grow their network in Domestic US markets, the Caribbean, and Latin America.

Ben Baldanza, President and CEO of Spirit Airlines said, “The aircraft have been successful from every perspective – economy, environmental impact, comfort and efficiency. With more A320s and now the A320neo on their way to Spirit, we look forward to building on all the positives we’ve experienced so far.”

John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers, said, “When these newly ordered aircraft are delivered, the size of Spirit’s Airbus fleet will be close to triple what it is today.”  Leahy continued, “It’s a high compliment and testament to the growing efficiencies of our single-aisle family when an airline chooses it exclusively to propel their success into the future.”

The A320neo is expected to enter service in 2015.  The new engines combined with the huge “Sharklet” wing tip devices are predicted to deliver a 15 per cent savings in fuel.
