AirBerlin and Etihad Tie-Up – Codeshares

AirBerlin and Etihad Start Codeshare Agreement

In the footsteps of last month’s announcement that Etihad Airways would become AirBerlin’s largest single shareholder comes news the two plan on extensive codeshare arrangements.

AirBerlin will begin flights to Abu Dhabi (AUH), starting on January 15, using an Airbus A330-200 aircraft will operate four weekly flights.  To gain traffic through Abu Dhabi, Etihad Airways will place their code – EY – on these flights.

The codeshare agreement will provide European travelers immediate access to a total of 29 flights a week to and through Abu Dhabi from the four German hubs of Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, and Munich, with plans to increase to 42 flights from mid-April.

Etihad Airways will further codeshare on AirBerlin flights with its EY tag to Basel, Catania, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Hannover, Helsinki, Milan, Rome, Stuttgart, Venice, and Zurich.

Part of this new agreement, said to be part of a “strategic partnership”, will also provide AirBerlin place its code – AB – on Etihad Airways flights from Düsseldorf, Frankfurt and Munich to Abu Dhabi and on Etihad Airways’ flights from Abu Dhabi to Bangkok, Malé and Singapore.  The strategic partnership with Ethiad was inked in December 2011.

AirBerlin, already conducting codeshares with oneworld carriers, is still on target to becoming a member of the oneworld alliance, joining American Airlines, British Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Malév, Royal Jordanian and S7 by Spring 2012.
