Air France – KLM places Boeing 787 Dreamliner Order

The order, attributed to an unidentified customer, signed for twenty-five Boeing 787’s during the month of December 2011, was the workings of Air France-KLM Group.  The deal was finalized January 10, 2012, with the French-Dutch carrier.  A preliminary agreement for this order was first announced on September 16, 2011.

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner will be an important part of renewing the Air France-KLM fleet.  KLM still operates a number of older MD-11 tri-jet aircraft as well as many 747-400 Combi aircraft.  While the Boeing 787-9 may not directly replace a specific aircraft, they will aid in fleet renewal.

The Air France-KLM Group is one of the world’s largest 777 operators, a customer of both the Boeing 777-200 and Boeing 777-300 twin-jet, twin aisle line of aircraft.  The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is a larger version of the 787-8 and has the ability to carry between 250 and 290 passengers on routes of 8,000 to 8,500 nautical miles.  With its composite design and modern engines, it’s extremely fuel efficient, using 20% less fuel than existing similar sized aircraft and travels at a speed of 0.85 mach, inline with the speed of today’s fastest wide-body planes.

With the launch of the CO2 emissions trading program in the European Union, this order could not have come at a better time.

“By making the 787 a key part of its fleet renewal, Air France-KLM strengthens its position as a worldwide leader,” said Jim Albaugh, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “Reaction to the Dreamliner’s entry into service has been phenomenal and we look forward to seeing passengers of Air France-KLM fly on this revolutionary airplane.”

One phenomenal aspect of the Boeing 787 is most of it is outsourced – of interest to this particular order, eight French companies partner with Boeing on the 787 Dreamliner.  The Air France-KLM Group is a long-time and valued customer with a large Boeing fleet of 188 airplanes in operation, including 74 for Air France and 114 for KLM.
