US Airways Finishes First-Class Cabin Installs on Regional Jets

US Airways Add's First Class on Larger US Airways Express Jets | Air Travel News

First Class on Larger US Airways Express Jets

US Airways finished the installation of First Class cabins on 110 regional jets operating as US Airways Express.  Upgraded aircraft include the Embraer 175 and Embraer 170 fleets and the Canadair Regional Jet 700 and 900 fleets.  This put US Airways on par with competitors such as Delta Air Lines and United Airlines.   The carrier can now provide seamless Economy and First Class services to more than 85 destinations and – from a statistical standpoint, offers a higher percentage of flights with First Class among with four legacy carriers.

For travelers, it is important to note this does not apply to the CRJ-200 and Embraer-145 aircraft that operate US Airways Express where the operating carrier is Air Wisconsin, Chautauqua Airlines, PSA Airlines, Mesa Airlines, Trans State Airlines, or SkyWest. A variety of regional carrier’s do operate the larger, upgraded aircraft including PSA Airlines, Mesa, and Republic.  These regional carriers are typically contracted to operate under the US Airways Express brand.   Some of these same regional carriers also contract to fly for US Airways competition such as United under the United Express name, or Delta, under the Delta Connection name.

The carrier began installation of the First Class product on its Express aircraft in September and completed all aircraft in mid-December.  The new First Class seats provide more legroom and space with a layout of 1 x 2 opposed to the 2 x 2 layout found in economy on the same aircraft.

“By working with our Express partners PSA, Mesa and Republic Airways, we are now able to provide the same levels of service our First Class passengers desire on our fleet of larger regional jets,” said Dion Flannery, president, US Airways Express. “With more than 640 additional daily flights with First Class available, Dividend Miles Preferred members have more opportunities to take advantage of complimentary upgrades while traveling on US Airways Express.”

The following chart indicates the seating layouts among the modified US Airways Express Aircraft now operating with first class:

Aircraft Type Aircraft in Fleet First Class Seats First Class Pitch Coach Seats Coach Pitch Total Seats
CRJ-700 14 9 37″ 58 31″ 67

EMB-170 20 9 37″ 60 31″ 69
EMB-175 38 8 37″ 72 31″ 80

In addition to the improvements made to its Express fleet, US Airways is working to upgrade other products such as their International Business Class Product – The Envoy Suit –  on US Airways wide-body Airbus A330-300 aircraft.

Last, if you’re able to find a way into First or International Business Class, be on the look-out for new menu’s from US Airways.
