New Liberia Terminal Opens January 12

It has been a long time coming, but Liberia, Guanacaste, Costa Rica’s new terminal building is set to open next Thursday, January 12th.  The new terminal is an air conditioned dual level facility with everything from shopping to jet-bridges for passenger aircraft.

On Wednesday, December 28th, the airport received the final acceptance of the Works and Commissioning Certificate of the new passenger Terminal Building of the Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport.  This was ratified by the Consejo Técnico de Aviación Civil (CETAC) the evening of January 3, 2012.  These were the 2nd and 3rd stages required to start operations.

In a weeks time on Wednesday, January 11, 2012, the last aircraft will depart from the old, open-air facility.  The following morning at 04:00 all operations will be serviced from the new facility.  For Coriport S.A. they’re looking to get the word out about this exciting milestone.

The importance of this project for tourism in Costa Rica is significant.  The Pacific beach areas, such as Tamarindo Beach, are becoming popular hotspots, as well as the Papagayo Gulf and the resorts along the Pacific.  Its not just beaches – the airport is well situated to visit Volcano’s such as Ricon de la Vieja and the Ricon de la Vieja National Park.  Not too much further is Lake Arenal and around the lake, the magnificent Arenal Volcano.

Tamarindo Beach is about an hour from Liberia’s International Airport and offers great surfing, fishing, sunbathing, and great food at Oceanside restaurants like Nibbana, Copacabana Bar and Restaurant, and Nogui’s.

If you’re tight on time and don’t want to drive to a destination like Tamarindo Beach or Arenal, Nature Air has a Liberia Hub and offers non-stop service to Tamarindo Airport from Liberia International and San Jose Pavas.  Nature Air has a fleet of beautiful Dash-6 (DH6) Twin Props and can take you across Costa Rica’s rugged terrain in 40 minutes opposed to a 6 hour drive.

The new airport will greatly improve the experience of passengers wishing to use the Liberia International Airport (LIR).

At the same time, it will bring more jobs to the Costa Rican tourism industry and assist in the development of the province of Guanacaste.  Specialist from Houston in the United States and around the world will support the start-up process of the new facility.  The new terminal at Daniel Oduber International will be an example on both the local and international level, and a work of which Liberians, Guanacaste and Costa Rica can be proud of.

Most US and Canadian carriers provide non-stop service to this second international airport in Costa Rica and JetBlue is the latest, launching services this past year from the mainland United States and WestJet, with plenty of flights from Canada.  Should you need a hotel near the airport, the Hilton Garden Inn Liberia Airport is an excellent place to start out or end your journey.  Travel Concierge services are also available at the Hilton Garden Inn, Liberia Airport.
