Spirit and JetBlue to DFW Metroplex

Dallas Ft. Worth (DFW) is in the middle of a bullseye as two Low Cost Carriers descend upon The Lone Star State.  Spirit Airlines (NASDAQ: SAVE) and JetBlue Airways (NASDAQ: JBLU) have announced new flights to the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.

JetBlue’s service is an expansion of its growing Boston network with the addition of three daily non-stop flights beginning May 1, 2012.  Dallas-Fort Worth will be JetBlue’s 71st destination and the largest metro area in the United States without JetBlue’s presence.  Ticket’s will go on sale Tuesday, December 13, 2011.

Spirit Airlines will begin a once-daily service to DFW from Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (IWA) and Fort Lauderdale (FLL), where Spirit operates a hub with many connections to Latin America.  The daily flight to Fort Lauderdale will provide consumers additional access to Spirit’s Latin American network; the new service begins on March, 22, 2012.

Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is a secondary airport in the Phoenix area already served by low cost competitor Allegiant.  Lynn Kusy, executive director of the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority said, “Combining Spirit’s famous low prices, Gateway Airport’s easy terminal experience, and new service to popular destinations of Dallas, Las Vegas, and Fort Lauderdale, and you have the framework for a tremendously successful venture. I thank the Arizona community for supporting Gateway Airport. It is because of their support, Spirit has chosen to be here.”

JetBlue’s Vice President Sales and Revenue Management Dennis Corrigan said, “Our three daily nonstop flights are scheduled at optimal times to maximize convenience, and with the recent addition of new gates and ticket counter space at Logan, customers flying in and out of Boston will experience easier travel than ever before.”

The CEO if DFW International Airport, Jeff Fegan, commented, “Landing JetBlue at DFW is tremendous news for our Airport and for the passengers we serve.”  Fegan continued, “We are very pleased to welcome an innovative and respected carrier such as JetBlue, and we are confident DFW travelers will enjoy the great service, flight options and low fares that JetBlue provides.”

“With JetBlue entering the Dallas/Fort Worth market, another important destination from Boston will be served by a low cost carrier,” said Ed Freni, Director of Aviation for Massport, which owns and operates Boston Logan. “Competition lowers fares which benefits passengers and the region. We support JetBlue on its continued growth as Boston’s largest airline.”
