JetBlue Lands Slots at NYC LaGuardia and Washington National

JetBlue A320 Takes To the Skies at LaGuardia | Airline News

JetBlue to Start New York LaGuardia Flights

JetBlue completed an agreement to purchase eight slot pairs at both New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) as part of a FAA auction.  A slot pair allows one daily arrival and one daily departure; the eight slots allow JetBlue to double its service at both airports.  While JetBlue is based at New York’s JFK airport in Terminal 5, they’ve been fighting to expand at other area airports including LaGuardia.

The FAA slot auction was the result of a gate swap between Delta Air Lines and US Airways. Delta traded slots at Washington National to US Airways in return for valuable slots at New York LaGuardia.  Since both airports are tightly slot restricted, regulators ordered the slot auction to provide smaller carriers and new entrants access to the two airports.  Canada’s WestJet, a new entrant, was the other carrier to gain eight slot pairs at LaGuardia.

JetBlue’s Vice President of Network Planning and Partnerships, Scott Laurence said, “Over the years, JetBlue has sought opportunities to grow in both Washington and New York. By nimbly seizing opportunities like this unique auction, we will be able to significantly expand our low fare presence in the nation’s capital and our hometown of New York City.”  Laurence continues, “We’re very excited to continue to invest in New York, as well as Washington Reagan National, a market that’s quickly proven to be a strong one for JetBlue after just one year of service. We look forward to bringing more low fares and welcoming more customers to these two popular airports.”

The carrier has been operating at New York LaGuardia since 2004 where it currently operates non-stop flights to three Florida destinations, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, Orlando, and West Palm Beach. At Reagan National, JetBlue began operations in November 2010 with nine daily flights to its focus cities of Boston, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, and Orlando.

Destinations and schedules for its new service will be announced in the coming months.

JetBlue operates a fleet of Airbus A320 and Embraer-190 jet aircraft with all-leather seating, free in-flight entertainment at every seatback, and unlimited free snacks and drinks.
