WestJet arrives to New York LaGuardia

Welcome WestJet to NYC LaGuardia Airport | Airline News

WestJet Winner of LaGuardia Slots

New York, Nov 23, 2011 – WestJet has announced today it successful obtained eight slot pairs at New York’s LaGuardia Airport.  A slot pair is defined as one arriving flight and one departing flight.

The auction, held by the U.S. Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), was the result of a gate swap between Delta Air Lines and US Airways.  Delta Air Lines provided US Airways with slots at Washington National Airport, in return US Airways provided valuable slots to Delta Air Lines at New York’s LaGuardia.  Since both airports are tightly slot restricted, regulators ordered some of the slots be released to other carriers.  For WestJet, this provided a unique opportunity to bid on two lot packages for LaGuardia Airport and one for Washington’s Ronald Reagan National Airport.

“We are very pleased with our successful bid,” said Gregg Saretsky, WestJet President and CEO. “Our growth plans, in which increased business travel in the East figures prominently, includes New York City, Canada’s largest international business market and we look forward to providing our guests with frequent, year-round service to the core of the Big Apple.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” continued Gregg Saretsky. “LaGuardia airport is slot controlled and therefore, access is otherwise strictly limited. Our ability to now serve New York demonstrates we are focused on delivering on our business traveller strategy.”

Prior to flights taking place, WestJet will be working over the next several days to finalize the transaction according to FAA requirements while working to secure U.S. customs pre-clearance from Canada. Details on schedule information will be announced at a later date.  All major Canadian Airports with flights to the United States provide a US Customs & Immigrations pre-clearance facility, allowing flights from Canada to arrive into US domestic terminals.

Prior to this announcement, Air Canada, was the primary Canadian airline at LaGuardia Airport.  This new competition into New York City may drive airfares down as the two compete for the same passengers.

LaGuardia Airport is one quick taxi ride to wherever you need to be in Manhattan and provides travelers with a simple, easy to use facility.  LaGuardia Airport is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

WestJet operates to 71 cities across North America and the Caribbean and is said to be one of Canada’s best employers. WestJet brought the low-cost carrier philosophy to Canadian aviation. The carrier operates a fleet of 96 Next Generation Boeing 737 aircraft with increased legroom, leather seats, and live seatback television at every seat, provided by Bell TV.
