JAL to operate 787 between Tokyo and Boston

Japan Airlines (JAL) has kicked off a round of special airfares to celebrate its brand new route from Tokyo (Narita) to Boston.  The route will make use of the highly-anticipated Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.  The flight will start operating on April 22, 2012, and will allow travelers to shave off up to more than 6 hours of travel time, with the upside of arriving fresh and relaxed because of the lower air pressure and increased humidity, combined with mood lighting on the 787-8 Dreamliner.

JAL will become the only carrier to directly link Asia and Boston, one of the largest U.S. metropolitan cities, with nonstop service that will be available four times a week initially and later increased to once daily from June 1, 2012.  American Airlines will also codeshare on this flight.  American Airlines and JAL entered into a joint business agreement last month and began jointly offering customers greater benefits and travel options over the Pacific.   Both American and JAL are members of the OneWorld Alliance.

To further boast its U.S. network, JAL has also been in discussion with JetBlue Airways.  JetBlue has a heavy presence on the east coast with a hub at both Boston and at New York’s JFK airport.  Such an agreement would allow for more options and smoother connections to cities across the east coast.

Boston will be JAL’s first North American gateway in 13 years.  Masaru Onishi, President of Japan Airlines said, “By making full use of the efficiencies of the revolutionary 787 as well as capitalizing on our closer relationship with American Airlines, we are confident this new route will prove to be another valuable link for commercial and cultural exchanges between both regions, and more significantly, the onset of JAL’s growth strategies going forward.”

Tom Horton, President, American Airlines said, “The Boston – Narita service is one of the many new customer benefits of our increased cooperation between North America and Asia with our long-standing and valued partner.”

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, thrilled with the new route, said, “I also want to commend Massport for their efforts to make this a reality. Our counterparts in Tokyo understand the value of a direct flight that will connect them to our growing health care, biotechnology, telecommunications, and advance technologies industries, and to our prestigious colleges and research universities. This is an invaluable economic partnership for the Commonwealth, and we look forward to the increased tourism, commerce, and economic development with Japan that it will bring.”
