Southwest Airlines Behind The Scenes – On The Fly

Production begins on a new series this week providing viewers a behind the scenes look at modern air travel.  Behind the scenes you’ll not only see the large scale inner workings and operations of Southwest, but you’ll get to see the personal customer and employee stories as well.  This new series will titled “On The Fly” will air on TLC with 13 half-hour episodes.

“Southwest Airlines will be in viewers homes, featuring our operations, culture, and spirit,” said Linda Rutherford, Vice President of Communications and Strategic Outreach.  From Pilots to Flight Attendants and Ramp Agents to Customer Service, no stone is left unturned as you view parts of Southwest never profiled in the past.

Rutherford continues, “We are excited to open our doors to TLC viewers because our Employees will be wonderful ambassadors to reveal the behind-the-scene happenings of working for an airline.”

Production begins this weekend at Baltimore-Washington International airport (BWI) and Denver International Airport (DEN). Southwest Airlines has a large presence at Baltimore-Washington and they’re gaining traction in Denver, hubs to both Frontier and United.

Production is being done by ITV Studios America, while Creative Artists Agency (CAA), a leading sports and entertainment agency, brokered the deal on behalf of Southwest Airlines.  ITV Studios America, the US production arm of ITV Studios in the UK, is among the largest international producers for the US market and a major force in acquiring, developing and producing reality and scripted programming for US networks.

Southwest Airlines is celebrating 40 years and is the nations largest for domestic passengers boarded. Between their open seating policy, bags fly free, no-frills, and an all Boeing 737 fleet, they’re one powerful force on the market.  Southwest 737’s can be located in 72 cities in 37 states when they’re not airborne on one of their 3,300 daily flights.

Destinations continue to be added to the map with the acquisition of AirTran.  Atlanta’s Hartsfield Jackson International Airport (ATL) is the latest addition for Southwest as of this writing. Ironically, Southwest’s subsidiary, AirTran, will be subleasing it’s large Boeing 717-200 fleet to Delta Air Lines. Delta Air Lines is the largest carrier at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson and primary competitor in the Atlanta market.

Southwest is Dallas based at Love Field (DAL), operates an all Boeing 737 fleet and has more than 37,000 employees across the United States.
